Utzon x Platón (2024)

Utzon x Platon reflects on thought as a habitable space and on drawing as a bridge between the realm of ideas and that of matter.

Taking as a starting point the famous self-portrait that architect Jørn Utzon —designer of the Sydney Opera House— drew in 1967, Plaza reinterprets that gesture not as homage but as a re-reading: an exploration of how intuition turns into form.

The composition is divided into three symbolic regions evoking the different levels of creative consciousness.

At the upper right, the conscious individual remains alert to the external world; at the centre, the field of thought, where the senses fade and the mind dives inward; and along the lower left, the Platonic realm of ideas, where shapes pulse before being named.

The hands, drawn in dialogue with the line, act as conduits between these worlds —the channel through which the immaterial becomes visible.

Here, drawing transcends its preparatory role to become a philosophical act: a map of the mental process that gives rise to creation itself, and a reminder that true architecture —that of thought— is always built from within.
